The International Human Solidarity Day is celebrated on 20th December. Purpose: to familiarize member states with global goals and initiatives for poverty reduction, to formulate and share strategies for poverty reduction around the world. In addition to the United Nations, this day is also celebrated by the World Solidarity Fund. Every individual, of course, can participate in the celebration. However, everybody has been waiting for states and governments to take specific steps (for a long time).
For the United Nations, the International Human Solidarity Day is a day to:
- celebrate unity in diversity,
- remind governments to respect their obligations under international agreements,
- raise public awareness of the importance of solidarity,
- stimulate debate on ways to promote solidarity to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, including poverty eradication, and
- take action to encourage new initiatives to eradicate poverty.
This day was established by the United Nations Millennium Declaration, which establishes civil and political rights of the individual in the modern era by establishing external relations between Member States. It was established by the General Assembly during the 2005 World Summit and was officially defined on 22nd December of the same year. With this document, solidarity was recognized as a fundamental and universal value.
The definition of solidarity is that it is a feeling of connection and togetherness with others. It involves action to help, support, cooperate and share regardless of differences in nationality, culture, religion, gender, age or social status. Solidarity is the foundation of democracy, human rights, social justice.
The best way to mark the International Human Solidarity Day in Belgrade is to do something for those in need.
