International breast cancer month, October, in many countries around the world, the only 30 days of the year when the disease is talked about the loudest. Its prevalence, raising awareness of the importance of prevention, early detection and starting treatment at an early stage are the reasons for organizing numerous organized examinations. When detected early, breast cancer is curable in over 90% of cases.
The number one disease among the female population. The World Health Organization reports that around the world, around 2,300,000 affected women are registered every year, and every year more than 500,000 patients lose their battle with this type of cancer.

Screening is the preliminary detection of previously unknown health disorders in the early stages, i.e. when there are no symptoms of the disease. Screening is done through tests and examinations. It is especially important that women between the ages of 50 and 69 respond to the screening. For women of the mentioned age, mammographic preventive examinations are recommended every two years.
Screening in Serbia is implemented in 35 municipalities where mammography is performed in health institutions. Thanks to mobile mammograms, 21 municipalities are additionally covered.
- If you are a healthy lady of at least 50 years old, it is time for your first mammography examination.
- For women over the age of 50, a mammogram examination is recommended once every two years.
- When you experience discomfort, pain, breast discharge or similar unusual symptoms, contact your doctor immediately.
- If there are women in your family history who suffered from breast cancer, visit a gynecologist or general practitioner already at the age of 30 and have a preventive breast examination.
In our region, it appears more often after the age of 40. In the last 5 years, a slight decrease in the incidence and mortality rate of breast cancer in women has been registered. In order to bring about major changes for the better, strong and vocal health measures for cancer control are necessary, from primary prevention, through early detection, to timely treatment of women.
According to the latest data from the Institute for Public Health of Serbia "Dr. Milan Jovanovic Batut", 4,447 newly diagnosed and 1,765 women who died from breast cancer were registered in Serbia.
In Belgrade, this disease ranks first among women. According to data for the year 2023, 568 women were diagnosed with breast cancer, and in the same year 529 of them lost their battle with this disease.
