In March 1847 the well-known Belgrade bookseller and printer, Gligorije Vozarevic, erected a wooden cross decorated with icons in his field at Vracar. The contemporaries interpreted the cross not only as a symbol of faith but as a sign of liberation – a symbol of victory. This cross is for that reason considered to be the first public monument in Belgrade. In 1931, the Belgrade municipal authorities replaced the ruined wooden cross with one in red artificial stone. That part of Belgrade is called after the cross – Crveni krst, or Red cross area.
